In musProtect, a watermark is an unintrusive bit of data that is put into an existing MP3 track which can be used to locate the original user that downloaded it. In general watermarks are used as a security measure for leak prevention.
Example: You give your contact “John” a musProtect invitation by email, he signs in and downloads the music release by clicking Download. At that point, musProtect processes these music files, injecting them with 10-15 watermarks. Some time later, you happen to find that your music is being shared on an illegal file sharing site and you want to know who put the release there. You then download it from that site and run the files through musProtect, the program scans your music and finds the watermarks, informing you that “John” was the leaker.
